Fort Ord, California: Prison 1, Post Stockade Confinement Facility

Experiencing the Fort Ord Prison is quite a brain-full.  Surrounded by fences, concertina wire, and invisible eyes, the prison has a profound effect on the psyches of those who enter.

The prison is surrounded by hills with oak trees and spanish moss, through which the visitor must pass in order to visit the place.  Once this sinister obstacle course is travelled, the guard towers and numerous fences with barbed wire must be addressed.  Of course, the place is now only guarded by ghosts, not people (and yet, while walking around, there is always this indefinable pressure).

Inside, the main area by the entranceway has doors leading off to the various wards and hallways of the prison.  In all areas are there bars, gates, locks, etc.  Quite possibly a terrifying place to be if one were so inclined to visit during the night...

The administration areas, including the warden's office, contain very little except for the occasional battered desk or trashcan full of fluourescent lightbulbs.

The "cental lockup" on the ground floor has a mixture of single cells as well as larger locked areas where prisoners were herded.  The presence of high windows makes the entire scene no less oppressive.  In a few places on this level, in this lockup area, someone has managed to break out large chunks of the cinderblock walls, creating at least two entranceways to freedom, to the outside world.

Also included in this collection are a few scenes from the kitchen/cafeteria area, where the only exciting artefact discovered was a broken goblet with a white ribbon tied around the stem, possibly reminiscent of a liberating marriage (?).

All in all, this place has all the makings for a cerebral creep-fest.

What a beautiful day for a prison exploration!
The back of the cafeteria.
Another dialogue between chairs.
High security enclosure....
Approaching the entrance.
The entranceway...
Inside the "lobby" of the prison.
Another shot of the well-enclosed "lobby."
Possibly an interrogation room?
Hallway in the administrative area.
Some kind of large, open room.
Admin hallway?
Warden's Office.
An auditorium, or large meeting hall.
Why are all of the fluourescent lights removed and hoarded in a trash can?
An old desk tucked away in a pitch-black room. Flashlight came in handy.
The ugly basement area. This place was dank, dark and totally nasty.
A paint-ball war near the toilet? Can't forget to bring the beer.
The ground-floor area below D-block. Lots of small cells.
What a grim entranceway.
Ground floor holding areas.
The way out. Somebody cut out a part of the wall here. A breath of fresh air.
Incoming morning light.
A communal bathroom.
A solitary chair.
Hallway on the ground level.
Large holding area.
A room close to the cafeteria.
The common area, or cafeteria. The kitchen is in the distance.
Inside the kitchen.
The back door.
The dishwashing area.
The only surviving piece of glassware. Wedding, anyone?
